If success was a karaoke song, us millennials would probably be stuck somewhere between Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" and Queen's "I Want It All". Because isn't that what success is to us? A blend of timeless rock anthems and the fervor of an aspiring pop star belting out high notes in a Videoke bar along Timog Avenue.
Back when I was fresh out of college, I equated success with the holy trinity of millennial dreams - a high-paying job in Makati, a swanky condo that screams "I've made it!", and an Instagram feed that could give travel vloggers a run for their money. Fast forward a few years and well, let's just say life had other plans.
Here I am, nestled comfortably in a shared flat, nowhere near the skyline views of a Rockwell condo. But hey, the view from here isn't so bad either. I've got a front-row seat to the spectacle of a Manila sunset, the unfiltered, raw, and un-Instagrammable kind. And my job? No, it's not the six-figure salary I dreamed of, but it's a job I've grown to love, filled with little victories, laugh-out-loud moments, and a bunch of office buddies who've turned into family.
The best part? I can afford to treat myself to that samgyupsal buffet along Kalayaan Avenue anytime I fancy. Now if that's not success, I don't know what is! And did I mention I finally got to taste those fancy, overpriced milk teas everyone's been raving about?
While I don't have an Instagram feed that screams 'world traveler', I've got an array of memorable moments etched in my heart. I might not be sipping cocktails in a Bali beach club, but I've shared laughter, stories, and Red Horse sessions under the city lights with my best buddies. In my book, that's a five-star experience!
So, am I successful? Well, if success means a 30th floor condo, a 1M annual package, and breakfast in Paris, then probably not. But if success is measured by personal growth, lessons learned, relationships built, and the ability to enjoy life's simple pleasures like Jollibee Chickenjoy on a Sunday afternoon, then heck yeah, I'm successful!
In the end, success, like beauty, is in the eye (or the ear) of the beholder. So, my fellow millennials, let's keep tweaking the lyrics, adjusting the melody, and hitting those high notes in our unique song of success. After all, isn't life too short to be singing someone else's tune? Here's to writing our own lyrics, hitting our own high notes, and singing our hearts out in this karaoke bar we call life. Kaya natin 'to!
