Do you recall our little chitchat with our therapist, the one with the impressive collection of indoor plants? She'd said, "When dread feels like a monster hiding in the closet of your thoughts, remember, even monsters are scared of their own shadows." I've held onto these words like my favorite blanket whenever anxiety tried to pull the rug from under my feet.
She asked us to visualize our anxiety as a beast. Initially, this seemed daunting. It appeared as a ferocious creature with piercing eyes and sharp teeth. But gradually, as we worked together, using breathing techniques, grounding exercises, and positive affirmations, the image of the beast started to morph. Its fierce eyes softened, its sharp teeth dulled, and slowly, it began to shrink in size. Today, the beast is no more than a tiny creature, a reminder of the dread we once felt and the courage we used to tame it.
