Welcome to the Chronicles of Narnia, except replace the fauns, lions, and snowy landscapes with flannel shirts, sports gear, and the lingering scent of Axe body spray. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I'm the only damsel in a brotherhood of five dudes.
Hand-me-downs, usually a sisterhood tradition of swapping stylish outfits, was an experience of inheriting a parade of superhero t-shirts and baggy cargo shorts in my world. I strutted around looking like I’d raided the lost and found of a local skate park. Funnily enough, I kind of rocked it. High fashion? Maybe not. Unique? Absolutely.
Now, let's talk hair. My brothers wouldn't know a French braid from French fries. My attempts at achieving fabulous hairdos often looked more like ‘hair-don’ts’. But on the bright side, I learned the art of self-reliance. I could whip my hair into a ponytail faster than one could say, "Is that a hairband or a rubber band?"
And crushes? Announcing a crush in my household was akin to throwing a steak into a pit of wolves. The detective work that ensued would put Sherlock Holmes to shame. They’d inspect every detail of my unsuspecting crush’s life, making me wonder if I'd accidentally subscribed to a Big Brother edition of matchmaking.
Heart-to-heart talks were an adventure, too. Imagine seeking advice on period cramps from folks whose primary concern is whether they’ve got enough hair on their face to justify buying a razor. But they listened and offered advice that varied from 'offer her ice cream' to 'maybe a good workout will help'. Not exactly WebMD, but it was something.
So, why do I love being the only girl among five boys, you ask? Because amidst the chaos and the noise, there is an unsaid protection, a fierce love. Being their sister has always made me feel like a cherished princess, not because they treated me as fragile, but because they treated me as precious. They helped me grow, toughened me up, and made sure I knew my worth.
And for that, I wouldn’t trade my band of brothers for all the sisterly fashion advice in the world. Because, in this comically strange circus of testosterone, I am and always will be, their majesty.
